History
MMN was commenced by a group of Christian Doctors in the UK in 1922. They had a concern for their medical colleagues involved in missionary work overseas. In 1934 they established a fund and began to publish a quarterly magazine that contained reports from the mission field and which also gave information by which their missionary colleagues could be informed about progress in their profession.
In 1982 MMN became aware of the advantage of container shipping and in that year two 20ft container loads of drugs and medical aids were sent to missionaries serving in Zambia. The work continued to grow so that by the year 2004 seventy-seven containers were sent overseas to eleven different countries. Nowadays, with the increased availability of products and services overseas and the increasing costs and difficulties of transportation, MMN seeks alternative and more economic ways of helping those in need, mainly through grant giving and sponsorship programmes.
How We Operate
For countries where containers are helpful, MMN are grateful for donors of goods and equipment from the UK to meet the practical needs identified by the missionaries. Individuals, Churches, and Trusts combine to supply, through MMN, the required goods, materials and necessary funding. MMN also purchases goods on behalf of missionaries.
MMN does not open the packages it receives therefore all boxes and bags must be securely packaged for onward shipment and any correspondence for the office should be sent under separate advice. The contents should be clearly identified on the package and, if possible, the weight also recorded.
If a particular destination is requested then that too should be clearly noted. If a donor includes their name and address inside the package then most missionaries will return a letter of thanks.
